What topics will be covered ?

Participants will choose one of the following tracks.  Each track has a variety of sessions to choose from. Click here for more details about each session.

Track 1:SMART Board - Beginner

Intended Audience: Any educators who have very little experience working with a SMART Board.

Session Topic:  Everything you need to know to get started with your SMART Board. Note: this is a full day session.


Track 2: SMART Board – Beyond the basics

Intended Audience: Educators with at least 1 year experience using a SMART Board interactive whiteboard.

Select 2 from the following session topics:

  • Developing intermediate skills with SMART Notebook™ software, to easily modify existing Notebook files or begin creating your own.
  • Developing advanced skills by learning strategies for using Notebook software to differentiate instruction, and account for students’ different learning styles and abilities. Also learn how to transform your Notebook files to address Higher-Order Thinking skills.
  • Instructional design strategies for creating effective digital content in SMART Notebook software to enhance SMART Notebook files you have already created.
  • The tools and features of SMART Notebook Math Tools - a must-have add-on that combines all the tools you need to teach math concepts.
  • Everything you need to know to get started with your SMART Response interactive response     system.
  • Using SMART Response beyond summative activities that focus on assessment of learning, and leveraging technology tools through assessment for learning and as learning, to enhance student engagement and success.
    • This session will be lead by former co-leads of the regional  assessment and evaluation focus group, ae.misalondon.ca.
  • Math strategies to stimulate student-learning, consolidate student understanding and provide immediate feedback.
  • Literacy, activating cognitive processes so student take greater responsibility for their own learning, and strategies for deconstructing text.
  • Strategies to engage junior students while teaching digital citizenship and internet safety.
  • Getting the most out of your computer lab, 1-to-1 environment, laptop cart, iPad initiative or bring-your-own-device classroom, through software that connects to your SMART Board and encourages collaboration.

 

Track 3: Supporting students with special needs in the classroom

Intended Audience: Any educators who would like to attend.

Select 2 from the following session topics:

  • Developing intermediate skills with SMART Board tools and SMART Notebook software, and engaging students at all levels.
  • A demonstration of how to fully engage all students – including students with special needs – during regular classroom instruction.
    • This session will be lead by a Student Engagement Teacher from Upper Canada District School Board who is involved with the Smart Inclusion initiative. Some of the instructional technologies to be included in this session are the SMART Board, SMART Notebook Software, SMART Table, SMART Document Camera, laptops, voice output devices, switches and web 2.0 tools.


Track 4: Administrator / Technology Leader

Intended Audience: Any educators whose role supports effective use of technology in the classroom. This includes: principals, vice principals, lead technology teachers, curriculum consultants, school board technology support staff, and technology decision makers/ implementers 

Select 2 from the following session topics:

  • Key ingredients and strategies to ensure technology is used effectively by the teachers you support.
  • SMART’s Learning Pathway for SMART Board users (the 5 stages of use) and the tools you can use to assess it.
  • How to connect to parents, and the challenges, successes and approaches towards creating a school culture, impacting a system, and involving parents through the use of SMART technologies and other resources.      
    • This session will be lead by the principal and staff at Joyce Public school. Joyce Public School in Toronto is one of only three SMART Elite Showcase Schools in Canada and recipient o fnumerous provincial and national awards.
  • Basics of the SMART Board and SMART Response, and a facilitated discussion on how they can be used during staff meetings and for other administrative tasks.
    • This session is meant for principals and vice principals only.

Note: Those registered in the Administrator / Technology Leader track may also choose sessions from Tracks 2 and 3 above.
